Punjab is located in NW India and borders Pakistan’s Punjab Province. The Punjabi people groups were split into the two Punjabi regions in 1947 during the Partition of India. The relationship between India’s Punjabi people and Pakistan’s Punjabi people is lukewarm; however, the governments of both groups have made concerted efforts to promote and maintain common Punjabi ties despite the geographic division.
Punjab has the lowest poverty rate in India and is home to 11 leading Public Institutions of Excellence in Higher Education. Known as the “Land of Rivers” for the five major rivers that flow through the region, Punjab is one of the most fertile regions in the world.
Punjab is the only place in the world where the Sikhism Religion, a religion which forbids men to cut their hair, is the majority faith. Religions: Sikhism -- 63.9%, Islam -- 34.9%, Other --1.2% |
